Substituting Supplementary Subtests for Core Subtests on Reliability of K-WISC-¥³ Indexes and Full Scale IQ
Lee Jun-Seok

Abstract
This study was designed to examine the impact of substituting core subtests with supplementary subtest on composite score reliabilities for the K-WISC-¥³ Indexes and full scale IQ. Subtest substitution guidelines of Wechsler (2003) were followed, i.e., only one substitution for each Index and no more than two substitutions from different Indexes. The Tellegen and Briggs¡¯s coefficient of reliability and Raykov¡¯s RHO coefficient were calculated. The necessary subtest reliabilities and intercorrelations were taken from Tables 6.1 and 6.4 in the K-WISC-¥³ Professional Manual and were comprised of the average of all age groups in the standardization sample. Of the 13 substitutions, 9 reduced the reliability and 10 lowered the RHO Reliability of Index score. Especially, composite reliabilities of Processing Speed indexes showed a reduction of .15. These results do not support Wechsler¡¯s recommendations regarding the substitution of supplementary subtests for core subtests in the case of K-WISC-¥³. Potential problems and optimum solutions for dealing with subtest substitutions are discussed.
